| The original remains a unique charmer. Those original orchestrations have such a pronounced Gaelic flavor, and the balance of vocals to instruments in almost every number is remarkable. It's so enjoyable and perfectly scaled, devoid of overkill. I grew up listening to the overture (often used, like the "It's a Bird, It's a Plane..." in other media), worked on the show in college, and have never lost my affection for the score. The show itself if pretty much unproducible now for myriad reasons (it's profoundly silly, especially the second act). The score is a keeper, but even a new book probably couldn't rescue it. |
