You do not need to have read any of the Potter books. There is a lot of background in the Showbill, brief synopsis of each of the books and a glossary of terms, beings, etc. My daughter had read none of the books and she had no problems, enjoyed the show. I had read two of them and didn’t think it was a big advantage. You could tell who the well-read were when characters from the novels appeared and got immediate applause or ogasps.
