...was in far more “low brow” fare than she’d come to be associated with: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. She and Marc Kudisch were brilliant as the flop musical’s villains, giving two of Broadway’s greatest musical comedy performances in the last twenty years. Maxwell’s inspired lunacy was hilarious, and yet also totally grounded in a great acactress’s sense of character. The biggest laugh of the evening came when she was cleaning her gun, it accidentally fired and killed another character, and she responded by saying, “Oopsie.” In thirty years of theatergoing, I cannot remember another instance of one word stopping the show like Maxwell’s delivery of “Oopsie” did. She was a master and is gone too soon.
