There are those who prefer the London recording. Perhaps because I grew up with the Broadway recording, that's the one I prefer. i had read several times over the years that the London recording had greater charm and a certain type of apt grittiness missing on the OBCR, but I like the Broadway pizazz. Call me a philistine. And even though the three leads are the same, it does sound like they were told that they needed to sell it more for Broadway audiences. (And I'm pretty sure that they were told that.) I also just prefer the revisions that were made to the score for Broadway, particularly the penguin music by John Kander. Also, Robert Ginzler did some adjustments to the orchestrations for Broadway.
Admittedly, it's been a while since I've heard the London recording. And I know that the Sepia does have the bonus tracks you mention. Can't remember if the Sepia is a public domain issue or if they had access to the original tapes. Even if it is a PD issue, they usually get good sources and do good work. Still, I'd recommend starting with the Broadway, and then if you really like it, maybe adding the London recording issue on Sepia. |
