| The question of Tony nominations for City Center productions back in the old days is a bit complicated but participants in City Center productions were nominated a good number of times, not just the two times you mention. At a certain point, Jean Dalrymple was removed from the nominating committee because of her conflict of interest. In any case, all those City Center productions were full productions, and they all ran at least two weeks. Well, one preview and at least 15 performances. In the very early days of City Center, some productions ran only a week, but after a certain point, fairly early, I think everything ran at least two weeks, and some ran longer. And as noted elsewhere, for the first few decades at least of the Tonys, all a show had to do was open to be eligible. Even shows that ran one performance were eligible. It's true that nowadays in Encores! productions, people often don't carry scripts, but I think they generally still have the option of doing so, and sometimes some people do. Still, those City Center productions up through 1968 were full productions in a way that I think Encores! really are not, even if they generally rehearsed only two weeks and usually used existing sets (often the original Broadway sets). ibdb is very confusing about City Center so I'm saying nothing beyond that because if I get started trying to say more . . . that way madness lies. Or at least today I don't have the patience. I've discussed it here in the past. In other posts, other people have dealt with why Encores! productions are not eligible. Just trying to help out with why at least some City Center productions up through 1968 were deemed eligible. |
