No- don't read the play beforehand

I disagree.

I think you're putting your own thirst for knowing everything about this world (which makes sense for a fan of the series) onto someone who probably doesn't care if they understand every single reference in the play.

I wouldn't read the play ahead of time at all. Reading it isn't necessary- the play isn't really written to be read (which is why some who have only read the play don't think it is all that good), and doing so would spoil a lot of what happens. Don't do it.

I could see a case for reading the previous books or seeing the movies, but that's pretty time-consuming. If anything, I would tell people to watch the 4th movie (The Goblet of Fire).

But there is really no need for so much homework. The recaps in the Playbill are plenty. They provide exactly the information that is necessary (no more, no less), along with some additional key terms that would be useful for someone with no familiarity with the series. Just get there in time to read through it, and you'll be fine.
