| I guess the new song will be at least one reason to tune in for the wrapup. ''Rise'' is reportedly ''on the bubble,'' but it's hard to imagine that NBC will renew it. ''Rise's'' ratings have fallen pretty steadily since its debut, and it regularly loses more than 60% of its lead-in audience from ''The Voice.'' A couple of weeks ago, I remember one of the plot points was the principal berating Lou, who pushed through the high school production of ''Spring Awakening.'' Turns out the show wasn't selling any tickets AT ALL. It was so bad that Lou wound up buying 30 tickets himself. The principal reminded Lou that last year's ''Pirates of Penzance'' was so popular that it was sold out and even had to add shows. And he stressed that ''Spring Awakening's'' poor ticket sales would be reflected in next year's budget for the drama department. Anyway ... Entertainment Weekly reported last month that ''Spring Awakening'' does better with high schools that you might suspect. Music Theater International, which licenses it, didn't give specific numbers, but says it's ''relatively popular.'' And while some musicals, like ''Rent,'' offer a ''school version'' with approved changes to adult content or language, ''Spring Awakening'' doesn't. Duncan Sheik says the only real issue is the song ''Totally F*cked.'' But he adds that Steven Sater has given his tacit okay to sing ''Totally Effed'' (or to bleep out the word). (The original cast of ''Spring Awakening'' was so stellar; what a shame they weren't filmed for PBS or broadcast in movie theaters.) |
