In my case, a friend had a cancellation in her party and asked if I wanted to attend, so I said yes. This was, however, the day before the show and as I had not read the previous HP books or seen the films (and also had no time to do any preparation due to my own work schedule till about an hour before the show), I read the Wikipedia summary of the 7 books. Not the ideal situation, admittedly, but it gave me enough information to completely understand the show and THOROUGHLY enjoy it.

DO NOT READ THE PLAY AHEAD OF TIME. First off, the play without the staging and stagecraft would be a completely different (and much more disappointing) experience and secondly, you'll rob yourself of every plot reveal and reversal (and there are many), which is the entire FUN of the play.

So that's why I, a non-HP fan, saw the show. I have to say, I have no idea why others who haven't followed the series would see it...
