I saw it a couple of weeks ago. If there had been an intermission, I would have left during it.

Ideas were introduced and then abandoned without exploration or explanation. For example, there is an elderly woman and a young man in the “all-young women” dance team. The dance teacher repeatedly addresses the group using “Girls” or “Ladies.” That seemed interesting — were we seeing something different from what the teacher saw? Is that how two of the girls felt inside? No, it turns out. The man is a man and how & why he’s part of the team is completely ignored. The elderly lady is treated as if she is a young woman.

Plot points are introduced and then abandoned or ignored. Big ones that inform lots of the dialogue and move the plot forward until they suddenly cease to exist without explanation. A prime example is that one of the characters is given a leading role in the big competition dance. In reality, the teacher is shunting her aside. Her role is supposed to consist of her only sitting cross-legged on the floor. It’s a BIG DEAL. Until they get to the dance competition and she runs all around, dancing with everyone else. Not because she’s making a statement. She’s just dancing along with everyone else as though we hadn’t just had 15 minutes of dialogue about how her part consisted of her just sitting on the floor.

I rarely feel pissed off at the end of a play, but I did after this one. If it’s meant to be work in progress, the playwright should do more work. It seemed like a badly conceived mess of a play. I’d love to hear from someone who feels differently about it. I’m interested in what it is I missed.
