I think we were supposed to disregard the ages of the actresses—to read it as “age-blind,” in much the same way we treat some productions as color-blind. They’re supposed to be 12- and 13-year-olds, and obviously all the actresses are adults. I think having one portrayed by a 65-year-old actress was an attempt to make the point. As for the boy in the class, I think he definitely is meant to be seen as a boy (his participation in the pussy chant notwithstanding). His scene with his mother where she’s asking whether he still wants to be in dance seemed to have unspoken colors a mother would only have with a son, not a daughter.
