| Granted SAINT JOAN is a talky play (as anything pitting civil law against religious law usually is). It takes an imaginative director and a luminous central character to overcome this major hurdle. The newest Bway production has neither. It drones. Endlessly. Condola Rashad is over-parted as Joan. She plays her as a monotonous character that no one would believe hordes of soldiers would follow into battle. The climactic trial scene, so beautifully written by Shaw, should leave the audience in tears. Instead, we feel sad for Joan but not much more than that. I had such high hopes for this. It let me down at nearly every turn. |
