I've heard that one reason given for Encores not having done any Jerry Herman shows thus far is that Herman is holding out for a full-scale revival of his shows on Broadway. I think he has been on record that his favorite score is "Mack and Mabel", though I'm not sure if that extends to it being his favorite show. I saw a concert version of the score (pretty much minus any book) at Lincoln Center around 2003. I don't know if anyone has come up with a truly satisfying or workable fix for the book, in which the second act is basically the downfall of Mabel when she falls into bad company. The show's score is so good, that I hope they keep trying to make the book work.
I'd love to see "Goldilocks" with full orchestra playing Leroy Anderson's great music -- he who wrote such great classics as "The Syncopated Clock", "Blue Tango", "Sleigh Ride", etc. "New Girl Town" deserves better than what I saw at Irish Rep some years ago, and "Redhead" if they can find a great triple threat in the Gwen Verdon mode who could pull it off. "Love Life" whenever its materials have been finalized would be great to see. These are among many others posted in this thread, among other threads over the years on this subject. But I think Jack Viertel seems to have final say, or at least a big say, in what is selected. |
