| Speaking for myself, the cast made this a must see. I do like the play itself however and believe it accurately shows a particular group of friends operating in a time before awareness brought LGBT rights to consciousness. I have never thought of this as a portrait of all gay society anymore than I think of a somewhat better written play "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" as a portrait of a;; heterosexual marriages in an academic environment. Both plays do show show the truth of humans particularly those fueled by alcohol engaging in behaviors hurtful to others and ultimately to themselves. There is honesty and anger in both plays, more artfully shown in the second play, and both plays have a bit of artificiality of situation. "Boys in the Band" especially is contrived in its plot but IMHO this does not distract from its basic compassion in the portrayal of its characters. |
