| I expected it to do well with Jackson. I didn't expect to see the play so re-minted, via Mantello. I felt I was watching a new script. I liked the play in the 90s, but this production is a revelation, and not only because of Jackson (wouldn't Ellen Burstyn be good, if the show were to run longer? How about with Jennifer Jason Leigh as "B"?) Mantello has made the play's arc over its middle interval an actual part of of the story. Whereas we had a break in the past, we now feel that segue into act two -- and the subsequent reveal -- is part of the way the story unfolds. It's breathtaking, but it makes the entire piece work in a different, mysterious way. |
