| Picking the dozen of Theatre World Award winners (6 males, 6 females) is always a juggling act. They try to pick the best Broadway and Off-Broadway debuts of the season, but that's dependent on what the season brings, and the tastes of the 7 TW nominators. (One of them once told me that the field of male contenders is usually much larger than the one for females.) So it's a snapshot of the year, and I've always thought they try to reflect the racial diversity when they can. (Last season, half of the recipients were actors of color, three of whom were Asian-American.) As for movie stars, sometimes that can seem to work against you. I'm speculating, but some nominators might reason: ''Why do THEY need a Theatre World Award? They're already established. Let's give it to someone who could benefit more from it.'' The Theatre World Awards are proud to boast about the many rising young actors they've recognized. In their press release, among those who've received the prize ''at the beginning of their careers'': Meryl Streep, Marlon Brando, Julie Andrews, James Earl Jones. (I'm surprised they didn't include Paul Newman.) However, other names in the press release were long-established before getting a TheatreWorld, like Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston and John Krasinski. P.S. For what it's worth, the Drama Desk did nominate Daniel Craig for ''Othello'' (2017). ... And Chris Evans recently told Variety that he's loving theater so much, that as soon as he finishes ''Lobby Hero,'' he's looking for another play to do. Maybe he'll be nominated next time! |
