I'm not sure I follow your comparison, but on another topic, I disagree about Kodaly. He is very charming - that's his MO. We may not like how he operates, and we may receive him as more smarmy than charming, but it's clear that both Ilona and Mrs. Maraczek fall for that (calculated) charm.
Even in "Grand Knowing You," his big "F.U." to everyone in the shop, he does it with a panache that belies his anger - and Bock's wonderful vaudeville pastiche supports that. He's going out on top - in his mind, at least - with charm to spare, even if we all see through it.
That's what makes him a character we love to watch. |
