| 'Rise' about to wrap: Do high schools have the discretion to cut anything from a show? | |

| In last night's episode of NBC's ''Rise,'' Lou faces pressure from the school board, unhappy parents and Principal Ward. He's been presented with a sizable list of cuts that he and Stacey, his assistant director, must make in ''Spring Awakening.'' Begrudgingly, they make many of them. (By the way, Lou once offered to make edits in the gay storyline in if it kept Simon, a possibly LGBT student, from transferring to another school.) Anyway, ''Totally F*cked'' becomes ''Totally Hosed.'' Georg no longer lusts after his teacher. Other suggested cuts included: no gay kissing; no mention of Wendla's abortion; no masturbation. The principal even attends a full run-through of the watered-down version to give his OK. I know ''Rise'' is a TV show, but how realistic is this? Or does this kind of thing get done a lot, but seldom gets noticed? One more show to go: the finale on May 15, which'll include ''All I Desire,'' a new ''Spring Awakening'' song by Sheik and Sater. But even before ''Rise'' made its debut on March 13, there was controversy over the ''straightwashing'' of its lead character, Lou. But overall, it's a show of lost opportunities. I'd read early reviews of ''Rise'' by critics who had watched the entire 10-episode season; they said Lou is such an irritating, narcissistic character (that Josh Radnor is saddled with), but he comes around. I've yet to see any signs of it. To me, Rosie Perez kills it week after week as the sympathetic Stacey who tries to support him and work within in the system. She oughta be the true hero and lead of the show. But I imagine ''Rise'' is set up to celebrate the white alpha male. Am I too cynical to suspect that next week Lou will rebel and restore all the cuts in the show, to great acclaim from students and parents, and that Lou's ''vision'' is validated, even though he's been a first-class jerk? |
