I couldn't watch after the first 15 minutes of the pilot because it was so unrealistic. As a former high school drama director and teacher, I couldn't stomach it.

To answer your question, people do stupid things with musicals all the time. I saw a horrendous high school production of "Godspell" where the whole thing was entirely rewritten (and made no sense). I saw a community theatre production of "Titanic" where the director decided to set it during the roaring twenties and cut some songs (probably because they didn't have enough actors). I heard of a high school production of "The Pajama Game" where Hines had a gun and not knives. Is it likely a high school production would come to all these edits? No. Principals do approve of shows, and it seems to me that in most cases, this sort of stuff would have been dealt with before. Honestly, Lou is a pretty stupid character if he decided to do "Spring Awakening" without consulting the principal ahead of time.

What was inaccurate in the first 15 minutes of "Rise"? As with professional theatre, high school actors don't rehearse in costume. The principal would not have the power to change directors in the middle of production; if this were to happen, it would happen before contracts were signed. It would be like telling Bernadette Peters in rehearsal that she wasn't going to be Dolly, but she can be Irene Molloy. Also, it would be a huge challenge to change productions after one started. The school would have to pay for two sets of royalties, which would be way more than it could afford. Furthermore, if they spent the money on costumes in rehearsal, it would make the change even more impossible. Add in some of the unrealistic touches with the characters, and I just turned it off. I'm sure there are also big inaccuracies with legal dramas and medical dramas, but I guess if I had been a lawyer or a doctor, perhaps I might have turned those off and watched "Rise" instead.
