Yes, I do confess to a bit of understatement. I was not comparing the two plays as to their quality of their writing and indeed continue to say that "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf" is more artful. I was remarking that I never approached "The Boys in the Band" as representative of all gay society in the late sixties but as a portrait of a specific group of men in that time period. I suppose that the comparison to academic society of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" came about because comparisons have been made of the two shows since "The Boys in the Band" opened, likely because of the excessive party drinking and the games so important to both and, of course, the mistaken notion that "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" was about two male couples. I don't think anyone ever claimed however that "The Boys in the Band" is equal in its writing to the Albee play. I do feel however that it is a fairly written play and that within it one can even see a small foreshadowing of the movement that was to spring up a year after its opening.
