I think I mentioned before that I saw a production of Carousel directed by Bruce Lumpkin, who got in a lot of trouble later for making unauthorized changes to Hands on a Hardbody. Lumpkin had been playing fast and loose for a while. I'm pretty sure that I remember correctly that Billy got shot by a policeman during the robbery in Lumpkin's version. Perhaps this was an authorized change (it's an action, and I don't know how clearly it's outlined in the script). But I think unauthorized changes can fly under the radar.
