| Much, if not all, of the dancing is there, and the excellent production results in a delightful evening. It is hard to match Robert Lindsey and that late '80s Broadway production, but Encores comes pretty close, with a mounting that is sunny, funny, and quite charming. There are multiple showstoppers, including, of course, "The Lambeth Walk," which is just terrific, and a great song and dance rendition of "The Sun Has Got His Hat On" to open Act Two. It's unfair to expect anyone to equal Lindsey, who made it all look so effortless and easy, but Christian Borle is a totally engaging Bill, and his physical comedy is impressive and often hilarious. His "Leaning on a Lamp-Post" couldn't be more charming. He definitely is working hard on stage, and I'm sure his performance will grow, become more relaxed, and get even better as the weekend goes on. Laura Michelle Kelly is a totally winning Sally; she delivers a very touching "Once You Lose Your Heart," and she and Borle join together and provide a nifty tap sequence in the title song. Harriet Harris, as usual, brings her comic genius to City Center; the "Song of Hareford," with the dancing relatives stepping out of their picture frames to join Harris and Borle, is a real treat. Chuck Cooper and the rest of the cast also do fine work. The underlying material doesn't completely hold up in spots, and there are moments, especially in Act One, that feel a little silly. But Act Two is pretty sublime and the ending quite satisfying. Overall, ME AND MY GIRL is good fun; Encores' continued ability to present remarkably ambitious mountings with their limited rehearsal time is nothing short of amazing. Warren Carlyle's production, with its split second comic timing, its physical demands, and its abundant dance numbers, along with its bright, colorful visual look, is indeed impressive. |
