| I haven't seen the film in a while and, I must admit, I did not see the stage version. (How did they do that avalanche anyway?) It was one of my favorite MGM musicals. It is now 2018. Times are changing. The plot is very loosely based on 'The Rape of the Sabine Women' though MGM managed to put a 'family fare' spin on a story about the kidnapping of six young women for the purpose of forced marriages. (And what would have happened if Jane Powell was not there.) Ultimately there is a happy ending, and we had no doubt that there would be one but.....there is no getting away from the actual story line. How do we watch a film like that today? Do we watch a film like that today? Note that the problem with the film is not only one of a lack of gender equality.....perhaps we can see past that because of the time that the story takes place as well as the time that the film was made. Just wondering what all you people in the dark think. |
