| I would say, having not seen it since I was a kid and always finding it dumb and corny then, that in general... we watch it for nostalgia and the elements of it (the choreography, the performances, the tunes maybe) if we get joy from or have interest in them... and if we don't, then we don't watch it. People who didn't grow up with it or are not interested in it prior to #metoo etc will likely not be interested either way, but if they are and they try it and are offended then that's for them to determine and turn it off if they can't separate the period and the context with the material and their current sensibilities. No judgement on them or the movie... it will be what it will be for whoever tries to watch it now. But if the question is do we list is a worthwhile movie musical still (if we found it to be before) and do we acknowledge it besides for the sole purpose of condemning it? Yes, I think we do. And if the intention is to condemn it I think in this case it's better to just ignore it and leave it as a relic of the past, it's a waste of energy to condemn something so mild and well-meaning that has no relevance or real place in modern culture anyway (it's not something people watch or talk about almost ever really). Maybe I'm underestimating the influence it might have on children or the intensity of the kidnapping part of the plot (or lack of impact of the consequences - which include being condemned and kicked out of their house for acting like animals and treating the women poorly, and then having the town go to hang them for their crime). | |
