| And while I expect to get chastised for broadening the argument, I think the same principles here should apply for any work of art deemed in any quarters, by any people, to be deemed ‘problematic’, ‘irrelevant’, or ‘offensive’.... Whether it’s “Show Boat” or “Carousel”, whether it’s an Oscar-winning performance in “The Usual Suspects” or an Oscar-winning movie like “Annie Hall”, whether it’s Jeffrey Tambor’s performance on TV in “Transparent” or - dare I say it - an episode of “The Cosby Show” - these works were/are resonant or important, at least at one time or another, for a reason. They may not hold up for some people, and for others they may still speak to them today. They may be impossible to watch for some people, and for others they may not be bothered at all (even while questioning whether they should be bothered). But at the end of the day, to paraphrase Chazwaza, if people “are offended then that’s for them to determine and turn it off [or not attend, not watch, not buy a ticket, etc.] if they can’t separate.... the context...[from[ current sensibilities. No judgment on them... it will be what it will be for whoever tries to watch it now.” Wagner’s operas have survived nearly 250 years... I have no idea whether people in general will be enjoying Seven Brides 150 years from now, or whether people will ever be able to laugh at Bill Cosby 200 years from now, or if they even should. But I firmly believe works of art should not be entirely and summarily consigned to the cultural dustbin of history because times change. Context is critical, and we should be critical of the works of art as well as the people who made them. But ultimately it should be up to each individual audience to decide for himself or herself. Now speaking of “Seven Brides”, when is “Song of the South” going to be released on DVD? |
