Pasek and Paul didn’t win for music in the Outer Critics Circle or Drama Desks (for the latter they weren’t even nominated in that category) -
and the show itself, while it won the Outer Critics Award, lost the Lortel and wasn’t even nominated for Best Musical at the Drama Desks.
In strange years like this, where there’s no obvious juggernaut like a “Hamilton”,
and where a very likely frontrunner was eligible for precursor awards from earlier seasons,
I’m really not sure how much ‘current momentum’ plays a role.
I’m also genuinely not sure how much the voters even care about celebrity anymore. (If they did, a pre-late-night-TV-show James Corden would never have beaten Philip Seymour Hoffman, James Earl Jones, John Lithgow and Frank Langella for the Tony 5 years ago, and Tracy Letts wouldn’t have beaten Tom Hanks, Nathan Lane and David Hyde Pierce a year later.) |
