| While the subject matter of "Seven Brides" bride-kidnapping is distasteful and objectionable, it is dealt with somewhat morally by the fact that Jane Powell's character of Millie is repulsed by what happened and does what she can to comfort the women; she immediately sends the men away from the house to protect the ladies. Only when the girls later on decide that they like the guys and together give the reason for the shotgun wedding is there any implication that sex (or rape) may have occurred. The audience though is aware that it is the married Millie's baby. But yes, the women have been kidnapped, and their kin have worried about them all winter when they couldn't get to them. So while the lovely music, settings, choreography and performances are there, so is the troubling plot. |
