| I have thought a lot about this question when it has come up before, and I would add a few points to the very good ones made in the post above. In SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS, the setup of the story is as follows: The Pontipee brothers come to town from their backwoods home with their eldest brother Adam and his wife, Millie, and the six of them meet six young, single women, all of whom have had marriages arranged for them with townsmen whom they do not want to marry. When these women meet the brothers at a barn raising, they are immediately smitten -- but, again, the women are not free to pursue any kind of relationships with the brothers because they are already betrothed against their will. Incredibly unlikely as this is by any standard of realism, that is the setup of the movie. The brothers kidnap women who want to be with them but are not free to do so because of the arranged marriage customs of the time and place. OF COURSE, even bearing all that mind, the kidnapping is still a tremendously wrong act -- and that's why Millie protects the girls inside the house and sends all of the brothers to live and sleep in the barn for months. And yes, as pointed out above, after the avalanche is cleared by the spring thaw, the townsmen come up to the Pontipee cabin with guns in hand to take back the women and kill the brothers if necessary. The kidnapping is presented as the rash act of extremely naive, unschooled young men who do it at the behest of their equally naive, unschooled, hot-blooded older brother, based on his reading of the story of the rape of the Sabine women. But, AS PRESENTED IN THE MOVIE, the result of this violent, rash, stupid act is that it prevents the women from having to marry men they didn't want to marry and instead allows them to marry men whom they do want to marry. Again, the entire story is ridiculous by any realistic standards, but the movie does not adhere to those standards. |
