I saw the movie recently on TCM and I think you might actually want to watch it again before asking whether we should even watch a movie like it today. That aside, context is everything and while looking at any work of art through the lens of our current social and political mood is certainly valid and important, we’d be remiss if we thought that was the only way to view the film or if we relegated it to the trash heap because it doesn’t suit a certain point of view. For one thing, the movie is a treasure trove of the attitudes (or at least what Hollywood perceived as the attitudes) of the period. It also plays with class, economic status, and many more gender and sexuality issues than the original poster points to (just look at the barely coded homo-eroticism in the film). We can look at in in a number of ways other than #metoo and find them just as valid. Or, we can simply sit back and enjoy the barn-raising scene (or better yet, Lonesome Polecat).
