Quibble 3: What happened to the whistle section of the dream ballet of "Leaning on a Lampost"? Hey guys, the whistle is the only thing playing the melody there. Otherwise, the dream ballet, my favorite part of the score, was sublime.

The winds do play the first bars of the melody verbatim (and harmonized), and hint around the tune through the rest of the phrase, enough that we can follow the contour of the line. (I assume the whistle part is there mainly because Lindsay could do it, lol, and that it was written for him specifically.) There's of course no rule that a dance arrangement has to slavishly follow the tune, although in the 30's it certainly would have been more normal to do so. But this arrangement/orchestration was done in the 80's lol.

I agree with you that the whole dream ballet arrangement is really wonderful stuff. As is the fun featured 2-piano writing at the top of the song (I've played the show too, lol).
