Nostalgic...or just becoming an old geezer
Posted by: tmdonahue (tmdonahue@yahoo.com) 11:02 am EDT 05/12/18

Do you share my impression that this board was more fun in the past? Perhaps, because there were fewer people posting?

(I don't know if I really believe this to be the case. Just thought I'd open some discussion.)

I miss Buzzie who was always a sparkler and is now a real "starkeeper" - "heavenly friend"

what happened to hitbycab?

I started following this page back in the late 90's......which makes me feel really old. There was a time when I would be refreshing the page every 15-20 minutes because there was SO much exchange going on.

Back in the old days there were personalities here (not that there aren't now)....people that I miss reading (Gracie, Buzzie, JLY, Richard Connema, Vera Charles and so many others).

Times change and people get busy and move on. Sadly I was unaware we lost my FAVORITE poster, the indomitable Buzzie.....reading of his passing brought tears to my eyes....he was truly incandescent....always facing things with a smile on his face...and a tap dance in his step. May he rest in peace and dance on forever.

In my time on the board, I've seen a lot of people drop off and a few die. Some people made announcements when they left, generally citing the frequent nastiness on the board. Those posts always got a lot of responses, ranging from we'll miss you to who gives a shit about you. Sadly, there were more of the later.

I have had someone go off on me once, and it wasn't fun, I must say.

But I learn so much on this board, and occasionally have lovely exchanges with fellow posters. Are there fewer of us? I think yes, but I think a couple of interesting shows worth talking about could change that...

You can be both things! I know I am.

In fact, can you even begin to be the former without starting to become the latter?

I’ve still new to this list but I have found the discussions very lively and most of the people posting have been helpful and kind.

I've been posting here since around the beginning of 2006. I don't know about "more fun," but this board was definitely livelier then, because I believe there were more--not fewer--people posting in those days. Those people were passionate and opinionated, and you could get pretty severely bashed if you didn't share someone else's opinion of, say, the order of brilliance of the Mame replacements, or Billy Elliot's chances of a ten-year run in New York. Today, you're more likely to get bashed if you don't share someone else's concept of political correctness. I think I preferred the old arguments. But this is still a place where you can ask virtually any question about the theater and very probably get a definitive answer within an hour. And a livelier Broadway season, of course, makes for a livelier board, while a season as dull as this past one doesn't help much.

I've been reading and posting here since '97. It's still a lot of fun plus the information I get about buzz, what shows I would probably like, stuff I knew nothing about but should consider seeing -- things like that -- reading ATC posts is really invaluable to my theatre experience.

However, I'm pretty sure there are dozens fewer individuals actively posting today than there were 15 to 20 years ago.

In fact, they often go together. (I don’t have an opinion about your question, though I thought people had been saying there’ve been fewer active posters, not more of them.)

A lot more offense taken and a lot more meaness.

I recently asked about current opinions of an old film favorite. Many good ideas along with being taken to task for thinking that there might be more than one opinion besides that poster’s. I’m sure you’ve read what some people write when the subject is a bit controversial.

I guess it’s easy to be mean when you write behind a made up name.

I come on here to learn about theatre history and the latest Broadway buzz. Yes, like anywhere there are cliques and in crowds who don't take to people that don't fit into their own molds.

I've been reading this site for about 18(20?)years, postings have been off and on. The thing I've noticed in the last few years is the relative absence of 'angry' disagreements, Also I enjoy it more when I've seen a lot of the shows. Due to geography /finance, I do Bway binges, last one a year ago, from CHICAGO(mon nite) thru Sunday(DOLLY and GOLDEN APPLE. I think this site keeps me from being too ''way down in the geezer freezer'(Little me). Also, when I first saw DOLLY(BAILEY '68) I don't know if I would have been moved to tears by PUT on your Sunaday Clothes, as I was last year.

Thanks to y'all who responded. I feel pretty good about the civility and range of opinions offered. Here's to more great times at the theater.

I’ve only been posting here since 2008 or 09 but it seems clear to me that the board is far less active now than it used to be. I’m into data, so I’d love to know the average number of posts per hour in 2010 compared to now. I also believe that when the board crashed and was down for several days a few years ago, the traffic fell off significantly and never picked back up. But data would prove me right or wrong.

I'll Happily Trade...

I'll happily trade nastiness, no matter how funny, for news and history. But since I've always skipped past what I didn't like to get to what I wanted to read, I can't really tell if there are fewer posters lately. I'm happy to see younger ones at all times, just as I'm happy to see younger people in the theater. And there doesn't seem to be any shortage of people entering the industry.
