| Spent 2.5 hours in heaven this afternoon at Warren Carlyle's loving recreation of this favorite. I was lucky enough to see the 1986 production eleven times with the incomparable Robert Lindsay and Maryann Plunkett and really didn't think I'd like this version as much, but the inspired clowning of Christian Borle and the heartbreaking vulnerability of Laura Michelle Kelly won me over after their first number. They are wonderful! As is the whole cast with a special shout out to Mark Evans who leads the magnificent dancers in a brilliant tap number at the beginning of Act Two. Really hoping this moves to Broadway!... And btw, does anyone know why the great Lindsay never returned to Broadway? It's been 32 years!!! He won every award for his genius performance! We still get to see the genius of Plunkett, but way too infrequently. Their Bill and Sally was a top favorite of mine in over 50 years of theater going; rarely have two actors been so perfectly matched! |
