| We were at the matinee yesterday and I can report on what happened. Following a sensational performance, the lights came up on the cast for their curtain call and they were in a tableau with Jim Parsons upstage, center - atop the small 2-3 steps which lead down into the living room area. As Jim came down the stairs to circle around the coffee table, he slipped on something on the steps - either a piece of wrapping paper or some of the mylar confetti (both from the party scene) and took a bad fall. A couple of his cast-mates tried to catch him just as he impacted the steps and the floor. As he got up it was clear he had really hurt himself and could barely put any weight on his right foot. He took his place in the center of the cast (with help) but he quickly indicated to Zach Quinto he had to get off stage. He hobbled up to the door of the apartment set and left stage. The rest of the cast took one more bow together and quickly left stage after that; they all realized Parsons was in tremendous pain. I suspect it's a severe sprain of his right ankle but it's possible he did more serious damage to the foot itself. It was a shocking and unfortunate coda to what had been a thrilling afternoon in the theatre. I hope Parsons recovers quickly and wish him well. (Note: it's somewhat surprising they canceled performances last night and today as there are three standby actors listed in the program for this production. Even if he hadn't had a put-in rehearsal, I suspect Matt McGrath knows the part and would have been wonderful as Michael.) | |
