THE ROYAL FAMILY OF BROADWAY musical: where is it premiering???
Posted by: portenopete 04:06 pm EDT 05/13/18

I've been watching a preview of two songs from an upcoming musical based on Kaufman & Ferber's THE ROYAL FAMILY on the other website.

The text says: "The Royal Family of Broadway will begin previews on June 7, 2018 on the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage. Opening is set for June 13, 2018 and will run through June 30, 2018."

Where in the name of G-d is the "Boyd-Quinson Mainstage"? No theatre or city or state is mentioned.

I mightn't be so cranky if what I'd seen had charmed me, but both numbers look awful. And I'm assuming that these are the numbers they feel will sell the show. Harriet Harris looks to be playing Fanny Cavendish and was giving her all- which is too much; I think 75% of Harriet is probably perfection. Mind you, the number appears to be so lame- I am assuming it's titled "Things I Can't Do"?- you can hardly blame her. (The rhyming of "eat" and "week" made me turn it off; let alone the Miss Hannigan-ish tone of the number, which feels wildly out-of-place for Fanny Cavendish, who is preternaturally classy and regal: qualities Harriet Harris could easily bring to the role if the material allowed her.)

The other number ("Question 4"?) seemed to be performed by Quentin Earl Darrington (please correct me if I'm wrong somebody) and I'm guessing he's playing Tony? It felt like a very serious, soul-searching leading up to a proposal. (Or is he playing Julie's fiancé?) Either way, it sounded tuneless.

I wish they wouldn't post this stuff online. Why give jerks like me the right to criticize the piece out of context before it has been deemed ready?

I hope I am wrong and that it turns out well. It's not a bad idea for a piece to musicalize. Although I guess the trap is that they all sing about the past and their glories, rather than about what is actually happening on stage. There's not really that much of a story to THE ROYAL FAMILY, and it has worked best (IMHO) when it is cast with legendary performers who summon the same romantic feelings from an audience that the Cavenidshes and Barrymores did back in their heyday.

Things I Won’t Do was written for Stritch and plays to her strengths. I agree, however, that they do no one any favors by recording an early rehearsal of a number. That’s precisely what rehearsals are for, to work and refine and polish in the safety of a studio. This mania to show every step of a process doesn’t seem healthy or productive.

I was going to say "thanks" until I saw that there was, in fact, an M in a posting labeled NM, and that that M was snarky and piqued.

I don't know if it's you alone or many others, but I am sick of people saying "Look it up yourself!" here. One of the sociological benefits of a chatroom is to create a community where we can ask each other questions. I'd rather hear something from Alan Scott or many of the other classy types who populate this board, rather than a website. (Believe me: if I'd needed the info immediately I would have looked it up.)

But my peeve was that it was such a sloppily-composed article. Either the website or the theatre should be making sure that all the relevant information is in the story!

Can you provide a like to the online article you saw?

Also, of course - and it sounds like you were unaware of this - the show itself has been a work in progress for about 20 years - it has now changed bookwriters and I don't know how much rewriting Finn has done with the music (a few of the original songs have become very well known over time), but although this is billed as a premiere (in terms of it being a completed, fully-staged production), the fact of a Finn musical based on this material is nothing new. Though it sounds like it is to you. ;-)

Should have looked it up: it's Alan H. Green and not Quentin Earl Darrington.

I've been watching way too many ONCE ON THIS ISLAND clips during Tony season! Apologies to both Messrs. Darrington and Green and I reiterate that Mr. Green's performance seemed unimpeachable.
