| This never makes sense to me. When were the understudies hired? Their job is to watch rehearsals (if they were hired at the start of the rehearsal period) and learn the part. Even without understudy rehearsals or put-ins, they should be able to go on at a moment's notice. And it's just a play (that I haven't seen yet) so it should be even easier. I've seen many people go on as an understudy in complex musical roles during previews. Why couldn't Parsons' understudy do it? I'm sure there are people out there who would love that job and would learn the role in one day if there was a paycheck and Broadway credit attached (Roger Bart actually did that with The Frogs). Anyway, that's my thought. I don't know any details. Maybe there was a reason I'm not thinking of. | |

| I was talking to a friend who understudied twice on Broadway and both times he did not watch rehearsals--that was not part of the job. As he said, they would have to pay him salary for a month if they did that--and not understudy salary, but full performer salary. So in both cases he was brought in later, did a couple rehearsal and got the low understudy salary for being on standby. | |

| This production has A-list understudies. I’m sure they’re off book. I have to assume there’s an Equity rule prohibiting them from performing without a put-in. But that wouldn’t prevent Mantello from filling the role. With the limited run, it means I’ll miss it. Very disappointing, and very unprofessional. For the record, I once got a phone call, flew to New York from Boston, and went on as a replacement that night. It can be done. |

| Interesting. Does anyone know if that is an Equity requirement? I can think of many times actors have gone on during previews without a put in. Who are these A-list understudies? | |
