This never makes sense to me. When were the understudies hired? Their job is to watch rehearsals (if they were hired at the start of the rehearsal period) and learn the part. Even without understudy rehearsals or put-ins, they should be able to go on at a moment's notice. And it's just a play (that I haven't seen yet) so it should be even easier. I've seen many people go on as an understudy in complex musical roles during previews. Why couldn't Parsons' understudy do it? I'm sure there are people out there who would love that job and would learn the role in one day if there was a paycheck and Broadway credit attached (Roger Bart actually did that with The Frogs). Anyway, that's my thought. I don't know any details. Maybe there was a reason I'm not thinking of.
