In the late 1960s, I saw Tune play a few different roles at the Milwaukee Melody Top, including the Emcee in CABARET. He could definitely go darker when the role required it. I can easily imagine him as the Leading Player -- a bit different than the interpretations we're accustomed to, but interesting in its own way. I would have liked to see that.
