Tammy Grimes: was she always pseudo-English?
Posted by: portenopete 07:50 am EDT 05/14/18

I was watching a clip from a 1956 TV show with Tammy Grimes, Janet Blair, Helen Gallagher, Nancy Walker and others singing about various jobs women had in the 1950's and I noticed that Grimes' usual Anglo-leaning accent wasn't really in evidence (at least in song). She really reminded me in that number of Barbara Harris in THE APPLE TREE. I know she was born and grew up in Massachusetts and went to some tony-sounding schools, so that could have accounted for her unusual accent.

But I was wondering if the more senior members of the board recall a time when her accent began changing?

It's interesting that she was married to Christopher Plummer who also sounded in his younger days like he was English (he is from Montreal). And Amanda Plummer has also affected an English accent through much of her career.

I first heard her on the OCR of 42ND STREET and by that point she sounded to me full-on English.
