I saw this last Friday and was surprised how stilted the opening of the play was. Glenda Jackson seemed to be on automatic pilot. Laurie Metcalf is unfortunately miscast and Alison Pill does the best she can with an underwritten role. The second half was far better and I do love the play but it was hard for me to erase memories of the brilliant Marian Seldes and unforgetable Myra Carter. Albee is quintessentially American in themes and tone and as fine as she is, Glenda Jackson isn’t able to convey this.
