Broadway Smash
Frozen
To Launch North American Tour in Fall 2019

Los Angeles to Host Tour Premiere

Frozen, the Tony(r)-nominated Best Musical, will launch a North American tour in the fall of 2019, commencing in Schenectady, NY prior to an official opening at The Hollywood Pantages in Los Angeles. The tour itinerary will be announced at a later date.

Frozen has quickly emerged as the biggest musical hit of the current Broadway season, smashing two long-standing St James Theatre house records since opening in March.

The pedigreed original creative team - including the Academy Award(r)-winning writing trio of composer/lyricists Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and book writer Jennifer Lee, along with Tony Award-winning director Michael Grandage, Tony-winning choreographer Rob Ashford, Tony-winning scenic and costume designer Christopher Oram, Tony-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz, Tony-nominated sound designer Peter Hylenski, Tony-winning video designer Finn Ross, Drama Desk Award-nominated puppet designer Michael Curry and Tony-winning music supervisor Stephen Oremus - will again collaborate to bring the tour to vivid life.

For information or to register for advance ticket access notifications, visit FrozenTheMusical.com/Tour, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Casting will be announced next year.

In addition to Tony nominations for Best Score, Best Book and Best Musical, Frozen also received a Best Musical nomination from the Drama League and Best Musical and Best Score nods among its four Outer Critics Circle nominations.

This new Frozen will join North American tours of The Lion King and Aladdin currently crisscrossing the continent.

Frozen opened to critical acclaim this past March with the New York Post raving, "Disney's struck gold! Sumptuous sets, gorgeous costumes and plenty of special effects to wow the audience!" The New Yorker calls Frozen "thrilling" and "genuinely moving" and applauds its "inspired stagecraft;" Newsday writes, "the show has all the makings of a serious megahit" and The Telegraph declares, "Frozen will burn up Broadway for years to come!"

"Frozen's songs shine!" exclaims the Daily News. People writes that the dozen new songs by Oscar(r)-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez "blend seamlessly with favorites like 'Love Is an Open Door' and 'For the First Time in Forever,'" from "Elsa's earth-shattering anthem 'Monster'" to "Anna's 11 o'clock heartbreaker 'True Love' that...will have you reaching for the tissues."

Frozen, a full-length stage work told in two acts, is the first and only incarnation of the tale that expands upon and deepens its indelible plot and themes through new songs and story material from the film's creators; in fact, this new stage production features more than twice as many songs as the film. Like the Disney Theatrical Broadway musicals that have come before it, it is a full evening of theatre running over two hours.

The Frozen Original Broadway Cast Recording, featuring an expanded orchestra of 44 and exclusive bonus content, is now available digitally everywhere by Walt Disney Records. The physical album will be available on Friday, June 8, 2018 wherever music is sold and can be pre-ordered here.

Based on the 2013 film written by a trio of Oscar winners, Frozen features music and lyrics by the creators of the film score Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Up Here, Winnie the Pooh, In Transit) and EGOT-winner Robert Lopez (Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon, Up Here) and a book by Jennifer Lee (Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph), the film's screenwriter and director (with Chris Buck). Frozen won 2014 Oscars for Best Song ("Let It Go") and Best Animated Feature.

Frozen's director is Michael Grandage, a Tony Award winner (Red) and director of three Olivier Award-winning Outstanding Musicals (Merrily We Roll Along, Grand Hotel and Guys and Dolls), and Rob Ashford, Tony Award winner (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and multiple Tony and Olivier Award nominee, is choreographer.

The design team for Frozen includes scenic and costume design by two-time Tony and Olivier Award winner Christopher Oram (Wolf Hall Parts 1 & 2, The Cripple of Inishmaan, Evita), lighting design by six-time Tony Award winner Natasha Katz (Aladdin; Hello Dolly!; An American in Paris), sound design by four-time Tony nominee Peter Hylenski (The Scottsboro Boys, Motown, After Midnight), video design by Tony winner Finn Ross (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), puppet design by Michael Curry (The Lion King, Spamalot), hair design by David Brian Brown (War Paint, She Loves Me), makeup design by Anne Ford-Coates (On Your Feet!; On the Twentieth Century) and special effects design by Jeremy Chernick (Aladdin, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child).

Two-time Tony Award winner Stephen Oremus (Avenue Q, Wicked, The Book of Mormon) is music supervisor and creates vocal, incidental and dance arrangements. He is joined on the music team by Tony nominee Dave Metzger (orchestrations), Chris Montan (executive music producer), David Chase (additional dance arrangements) and Brian Usifer (music director).

Frozen is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions under the direction of Thomas Schumacher.

I'm surprised that Disney is waiting so long to launch the tour. Since a tour was inevitable, I would have thought they'd have been putting it together at the same time as the Broadway production and launching it much sooner than a year+ later. I guess the Disney imprimatur and the popularity of this particular property override capturing momentum and publicity from Broadway and is just another way Disney gets to play by its own rules.

I'm curious if you have ever heard of a show actually being put together and launched on tour in the way you suggest above. I have heard of shows that know they INTEND to tour at the same time they are putting together the Broadway production, and maybe even sketching out a route. But for Frozen to have toured in the 18/19 season they would have needed that all mapped out and put to bed about a year ago at this time, long before opening on Broadway. I just don't see that sort of thing happening. To open on Broadway in the 17/18 season and tour starting in the 19/20 sounds very standard, and realistically the soonest it could happen. Not at all like Disney playing by its own set of rules.

Yes, I believe the tours for FOOTLOOSE and the 90's revivals of GUYS AND DOLLS and HOW TO SUCCEED were launched very soon after the Broadway openings and were being prepared simultaneously with the New York productions.

All of these examples were from the Dodgers, so perhaps this was something they did.

FOOTLOOSE was probably always going to have more success on the road than in New York, and I think it's been touring ever since.

With GUYS AND DOLLS, a popular chestnut, they probably had a reasonable expectation of success and a life on the road.

HOW TO SUCCEED was probably launched quickly to capitalize on the publicity surrounding the Broadway production in an attempt to sell tickets to a show that has never really been an audience favorite. Ralph Macchio was heavily promoted as the star and was probably a sensible choice to try to sell the show on the road. This one was all for naught though and my understanding is that one and all took a giant bath on this tour.

Just out of curiosity, I went to IBDB, just to double check my memory and I was almost correct.

The GUYS AND DOLLS tour went out 5 months after the Broadway opening. The FOOTLOOSE tour went out less than 2 months after the Broadway opening.

But the HOW TO SUCCEED tour didn't go out until about 14 months after the Broadway opening, so strike that thought.

you are right they could have started planning last fall when it was in Denver, but hardly any shows ever jump early except Hamilton i think did. but that was an August opening so more time.

'Aladdin' took its time going out on the road too, not launching until last year. My guess would be that there won't be a lot of huge tours coming out of this season other than 'Frozen,' so by waiting they may get to be the belle of the ball a bit.

i think subscription houses want it as an anchor to the season

I think (and i could be wrong) that Disney wasn't going to tour Aladdin and then they did or maybe that was Newsies.

why do tours launch from Schenectady, NY

seems like an odd place so there must be a legitimate reason.

In addition to all the reasons mentioned below.....

...I met someone from the administration of Procter's a few years ago at the late lamented Carnegie Deli (we were two singles plunked together at the same table) and he gave me the impression that Procter's had positioned itself as a destination to tech national tours BEFORE they went out. They wouldn't necessarily play the theatre for audiences, just do their two weeks of tech (or whatever) and then off the show would go.

As stated below, it's close enough to grab a train and be there in four hours.

And apparently it can reproduce many different sizes and shapes of backstage configuration to replicate the various houses a tour would play.

He said that in a small market like the Capital Region that that had been the lifeline that had saved the theatre.

I went to school near there and it's a beautiful theatre if I recall correctly.

I also went to school in Schenectady. Proctor's is a beautiful old theater downtown. It was very nice to be able to see concerts and shows while at college. It's walking distance to Union College, my alma mater.

I recall reading (on ATC I think) that there were some benefits like tax breaks or incentives available, that were significant inducements to start tours in Schenectady.

New York State offers financial incentives to shows that tech and launch in the state. It doesn't have to be Schenectady. The latest Lion King national tour teched and launched in Syracuse. And Charles1055 is right: Proctor's is a beautiful theater, nicely restored. I'll bet Charles and I went to the same "nearby" college!

Maybe it's close enough for the creatives to run back and forth to the city while they're getting the production on its feet for the tour? I imagine we won't hear much about the Schenectady engagement, and it'll be the touring equivalent of previews before the big "opening" in LA.

New York State gives a significant tax credit to investors in shows that start out upstate. See the rules below.

Correct on both counts. It is a combination of tax incentives and proximity to the city and the city's resources.
