seems like an odd place so there must be a legitimate reason.

...I met someone from the administration of Procter's a few years ago at the late lamented Carnegie Deli (we were two singles plunked together at the same table) and he gave me the impression that Procter's had positioned itself as a destination to tech national tours BEFORE they went out. They wouldn't necessarily play the theatre for audiences, just do their two weeks of tech (or whatever) and then off the show would go.

As stated below, it's close enough to grab a train and be there in four hours.

And apparently it can reproduce many different sizes and shapes of backstage configuration to replicate the various houses a tour would play.

He said that in a small market like the Capital Region that that had been the lifeline that had saved the theatre.

I went to school near there and it's a beautiful theatre if I recall correctly.

I also went to school in Schenectady. Proctor's is a beautiful old theater downtown. It was very nice to be able to see concerts and shows while at college. It's walking distance to Union College, my alma mater.

I recall reading (on ATC I think) that there were some benefits like tax breaks or incentives available, that were significant inducements to start tours in Schenectady.

New York State offers financial incentives to shows that tech and launch in the state. It doesn't have to be Schenectady. The latest Lion King national tour teched and launched in Syracuse. And Charles1055 is right: Proctor's is a beautiful theater, nicely restored. I'll bet Charles and I went to the same "nearby" college!

Maybe it's close enough for the creatives to run back and forth to the city while they're getting the production on its feet for the tour? I imagine we won't hear much about the Schenectady engagement, and it'll be the touring equivalent of previews before the big "opening" in LA.

New York State gives a significant tax credit to investors in shows that start out upstate. See the rules below.

Correct on both counts. It is a combination of tax incentives and proximity to the city and the city's resources.
