I'm surprised that Disney is waiting so long to launch the tour. Since a tour was inevitable, I would have thought they'd have been putting it together at the same time as the Broadway production and launching it much sooner than a year+ later. I guess the Disney imprimatur and the popularity of this particular property override capturing momentum and publicity from Broadway and is just another way Disney gets to play by its own rules.

I'm curious if you have ever heard of a show actually being put together and launched on tour in the way you suggest above. I have heard of shows that know they INTEND to tour at the same time they are putting together the Broadway production, and maybe even sketching out a route. But for Frozen to have toured in the 18/19 season they would have needed that all mapped out and put to bed about a year ago at this time, long before opening on Broadway. I just don't see that sort of thing happening. To open on Broadway in the 17/18 season and tour starting in the 19/20 sounds very standard, and realistically the soonest it could happen. Not at all like Disney playing by its own set of rules.

Yes, I believe the tours for FOOTLOOSE and the 90's revivals of GUYS AND DOLLS and HOW TO SUCCEED were launched very soon after the Broadway openings and were being prepared simultaneously with the New York productions.

All of these examples were from the Dodgers, so perhaps this was something they did.

FOOTLOOSE was probably always going to have more success on the road than in New York, and I think it's been touring ever since.

With GUYS AND DOLLS, a popular chestnut, they probably had a reasonable expectation of success and a life on the road.

HOW TO SUCCEED was probably launched quickly to capitalize on the publicity surrounding the Broadway production in an attempt to sell tickets to a show that has never really been an audience favorite. Ralph Macchio was heavily promoted as the star and was probably a sensible choice to try to sell the show on the road. This one was all for naught though and my understanding is that one and all took a giant bath on this tour.

Just out of curiosity, I went to IBDB, just to double check my memory and I was almost correct.

The GUYS AND DOLLS tour went out 5 months after the Broadway opening. The FOOTLOOSE tour went out less than 2 months after the Broadway opening.

But the HOW TO SUCCEED tour didn't go out until about 14 months after the Broadway opening, so strike that thought.

This is fascinating! I know some people who may have been involved with these. I am going to see if I can get more of the story. Thank you!

you are right they could have started planning last fall when it was in Denver, but hardly any shows ever jump early except Hamilton i think did. but that was an August opening so more time.

'Aladdin' took its time going out on the road too, not launching until last year. My guess would be that there won't be a lot of huge tours coming out of this season other than 'Frozen,' so by waiting they may get to be the belle of the ball a bit.

i think subscription houses want it as an anchor to the season

I think (and i could be wrong) that Disney wasn't going to tour Aladdin and then they did or maybe that was Newsies.
