I did not see Judy Garland perform until 1961. Quito's reference to Garland mentioning the boys in the band must have much earlier in her life Very interesting interview.

Mart Crowley says the title of his legendary gay play comes from the 1954 movie ''A Star Is Born'': "It's that line when James Mason tells a distraught Judy Garland, 'You're singing for yourself and the boys in the band.' "

James Mason was Dick Cavett's guest on a very old rebroadcas last night. Mason talked about how badly "A Star is Born" was cut. (common knowledge now). I wonder if I missed that line in the film. Thank you for the response.
