Saw both parts Sunday 13 May. Spectacular projections and lighting. Although as the review notes some wheeled panels had glitches.
Having seen Spinella in many plays in addition to Angels as Prior, I initially struggled with his gruff Noo Yawk accent. But by the time Ethel Rosenberg showed up I was convinced.
Caldwell Tidicue as Belize stole nearly every scene he was in. And got a huge number of the big audience laughs. Until reading the program after the show, I didn't realize he has another claim to fame. I hope he has many other acting opportunities. And during his cafe scene with Louis I leaned over to my lovely spouse and whispered that I wanted his zebra shoes.
What threw me off is every production of Angels I've seen, big or small, I always liked the four principals. In this production I found Harper and Joe unlikeable and unsympathetic. (The character of Louis by design is supposed to be irritating.) This made the climactic scene at the end of act two of Millennium strangely abstract.
Happy to have seen the production. But the unlikability quality left me more impressed with staging than acting. |
