QUESTIONS FOR MY FATHER BY AYA AZIZ DIRECTED BY ARPITA MUKHERJEE SPRING 2019 (New York – May 15, 2018) HYPOKRIT THEATER COMPANY (Arpita Mukherjee, Co-Artistic Director; Shubhra Prakash, Co-Artistic Director) is proud to announce its 2018/19 season, led by the reimagined TAMASHA FESTIVAL. Founded in 2016, TAMASHA: A FESTIVAL OF SOUTH ASIAN PERFORMING ARTS, is the only cross-discipline arts festival dedicated to South Asian artists in North America. In 2018-2019, Tamasha is reimagining its structure, featuring 9 South Asian female playwrights - Sharbari Zohra Ahmed, Aditi Brennan Kapil, Dipika Guha, Deepali Gupta, Rohina Malik, Divya Mangwani, Deepa Purohit, Riti Sachdeva, and Madhuri Shekar – with presentations of their work in readings over the course of the year. A new play reading and various special events will be presented monthly, with the generous support of a different theatre company. Those companies include LCT3/Lincoln Center, New Georges, New York Theatre Workshop, Playwrights Horizons, Premiere Stages at Kean University, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, The Public Theater, The Movement Theatre Company and WP Theater. “In our current climate, we believe it’s more important than ever to present and produce work that upholds the ideas and values that are in serious jeopardy in both America and in the world. We believe we must tell the stories of groups that are being marginalized,” said Arpita Mukherjee. “Our focus on intersectional stories by and about women* is the cornerstone of our belief in art as a way of education, resistance, and affirmation. We are proud to present a season filled with artists’ of extraordinary talents, highlighting the immense breadth and scope of work by women*.” In addition to Tamasha, the 2018/19 Season will also include productions of The Music In My Blood, by Shubhra Prakash and Sonalee Hardikar and directed by Hardikar; Romeo And Juliet: A Queer Female* Reimagination directed by Molly Houlahan; and Eh Dah? Questions For My Father, by Aya Aziz and directed by Arpita Mukherjee. Hypokrit Theatre Company is also proud to announce its selection as a 2018-2019 Domestic Partner at WP Theater. WP Theater’s Domestic Partner Program is focused on providing support to fellow organizations that are developing work by female-identified artists. Each year, WP Theater welcomes companies into residency at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre, providing them with rehearsal and theater space at a reduced rate, as well as artistic, marketing, ticketing and other institutional support, and present their work to WP audiences. THE 2018/19 SEASON WILL INCLUDE: THE MUSIC IN MY BLOOD BY SHUBHRA PRAKASH AND SONALEE HARDIKAR DIRECTED BY SONALEE HARDIKAR JUNE 6 – 17, 2018 AT THE AMERICAN THEATRE OF ACTORS A story about a music that demands great sacrifice from those who dare to pursue it. The Music In My Blood crosses the boundaries of time and space to bring together Prema and Walter, two people bound and frayed by their love of music. Fleeing the demands of being an Indian classical singer, Prema chooses to pursue a history degree in New York City. She discovers the writing of Walter Kaufmann, a Jewish man who developed a devotion to Indian classical music when he found refuge in India during WWII. Co-written by Shubhra Prakash and Sonalee Hardikar, The Music In My Blood begins performances June 6th, 2018 at American Theatre of Actors. ROMEO AND JULIET: A QUEER FEMALE* REIMAGINATION BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTED BY MOLLY HOULAHAN SEPTEMBER 27 – OCTOBER 14, 2018 AT ACCESS THEATER Associate Artistic Director Molly Houlahan brings back the tale that started it all at Hypokrit Theatre Company. Hypokrit’s 2018 Romeo and Juliet is radically reimagined as a world without men, where gender is fluid, and women* run the show. Vicious, out of the box, and wild – this female* queer retelling of Romeo and Juliet explores intersectionality and redefines the most classic love story through the contemporary lens of a post-gender world. Directed by Molly Houlahan, Romeo and Juliet begins performances on September 27th, 2018 at Access Theater. EH DAH? QUESTIONS FOR MY FATHER BY AYA AZIZ DIRECTED BY ARPITA MUKHERJEE SPRING 2019 Eh Dah? Questions for My Father follows the lives of a family divided across continents and *cultures in a turbulent political landscape. Set in Egypt and America, this contemporary musical by Aya Aziz explores what it means to live in a post 9/11 world. Recipient of The Best Book and Best Individual Performance awards at New York Musical Festival 2016, Eh Dah? Questions for My Father is directed by Arpita Mukherjee and will open Spring 2019. Shubhra Prakash is an actor, singer, voice over artist, theatre maker and short filmmaker. She has resided in Kolkata, New Delhi, San Francisco Bay Area and now in New York City. She has most recently co-written and directed an original play The Music In My Blood. Shubhra served as a voiceover artist for Priya’s Shakti, a multi-platform project supported by Tribeca New Media fund which has garnered over 400 press and media mentions. She wrote, directed and produced a play “For Our Own” at the Planet Connections Theatre Festival 2014 for which she received the Activist Award for getting a great deal of involvement from the South Asian Marrow Association of Recruiters. She served as festival director of the company’s South Asian International Performing Arts Festival in its inaugural year 2015. As an actor she just completed the workshop reading of Monsoon Wedding the Musical as the lead, Aditi Verma. She has acted in Hypokrit Theatre Company’s Romeo & Juliet as Mercutio, in The Tempest Ladies’ Taming of the Shrew. She also serves as co-founder of Random Fox Productions, her short Funny Faces was the Top 10 picks of Asian American Lab’s 72 hour shootout. She has attended producing workshop at Cannes International Film Festival 2015. Her short film, Three Dates – a short film, which she wrote, directed and produced, was screened at New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) 13′. MOLLY HOULAHAN: (Associate Artistic Director). Molly Houlahan is a New York based queer director and theatremaker. Molly previously was the Bret C. Harte Directing Fellow and the assistant to the Artistic Director, Tony Taccone, at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. As the directing fellow, Molly assisted Sean Graney, Daniel Sullivan on Macbeth starring Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards”) and Conleth Hill (“Game of Thrones”), Mary Zimmerman, and Les Waters. She closed the season assistant directing Tony Taccone on Latin History for Morons starring John Leguizamo that went on to Broadway in 2017. Molly assistant directed Kate Whoriskey on the Pulitzer Prize Winning Sweat by Lynn Nottage at the Public Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and at Arena Stage. Sweat went on to a Tony-nominated Broadway run in 2017. She recently assistant directed for Les Waters on For Peter Pan on her 70th Birthday by Sarah Ruhl at Playwrights Horizons, where she served as the 2017 Directing Fellow. Molly previously worked with The Public in the Producing Department and at Steppenwolf in the Artistic Department. Molly directed the successful run of the Off-Broadway run of How to Succeed as an Ethnically Ambiguous Actor at Castillo Theatre starring Zenobia Shroff from “The Big Sick” and her original musical Scorched was featured as part of the Araca Project in 2016. Her directing work has also been featured in FringeNYC, TinyRhino Short Play Festival, and The Habitat as a part of NYTW’s Jonathan Larson Lab. She has assisted artists such as Sarah Jones (Sell/Buy/Date) and Mira Nair (“Monsoon Wedding”). As an actor, Molly worked with Eve Ensler and Jo Bonney on I Am An Emotional Creature at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa. Molly won the Louis Sudler Prize for Excellence in the Performing and Creative Arts upon graduating Yale University. |
