Yes, I believe the tours for FOOTLOOSE and the 90's revivals of GUYS AND DOLLS and HOW TO SUCCEED were launched very soon after the Broadway openings and were being prepared simultaneously with the New York productions.
All of these examples were from the Dodgers, so perhaps this was something they did.
FOOTLOOSE was probably always going to have more success on the road than in New York, and I think it's been touring ever since.
With GUYS AND DOLLS, a popular chestnut, they probably had a reasonable expectation of success and a life on the road.
HOW TO SUCCEED was probably launched quickly to capitalize on the publicity surrounding the Broadway production in an attempt to sell tickets to a show that has never really been an audience favorite. Ralph Macchio was heavily promoted as the star and was probably a sensible choice to try to sell the show on the road. This one was all for naught though and my understanding is that one and all took a giant bath on this tour. |
