| Sounds like the Tony winners to me. If there's a major category that's a real tossup, it might be Best Actor in a Musical. |

| Although Brantley and Green chose Carousel, and Carousel has one more nomination than My Fair Lady, I think My Fair Lady will win. They both have their naysayers, but Carousel seems to have more of them. And my sense is that there are more people who really like MFL than people who feel the same way about Carousel. And My Fair Lady has won the Outer Critics Circle award as well. My prediction is that MFL wins the Drama Desk and the Tony. But who knows? |

| I certainly hope not. This production is a tragedy, and I don’t mean the love story of Billy and Julie. I mean the wholesale trashing of the score and the book of one of the greatest musicals ever written. Inexcusable arrogance. | |

| Funny, that’s how I felt about My Fair Lady. Could you be more specific about Carousel? I saw it Friday night for the second time and continue to be entranced by it and, yes, I am very familiar with the original version. I have never heard the score so beautifully sung; Jonathan Tunick’s orchestrations are stunning. I found the show emotionally satisfying and moving, whereas I found My Fair Lady cold and uninvolving. It seemed more like a play with music and became pedantic and pedestrian. And I am a My Fair Lady lover, and, yes, I saw the original, brilliant production — the show Lerner and Loewe wanted to write. The show at Lincoln Center is the show Sher wanted Lerner and Loewe to write. | |

| Without disagreeing with you about the difference approach by the directors, Sher’s changes are in tone and staging — every song that Lerner and Loewe wrote are present (despite some internal trims) and every scene Lerner (and Shaw) wrote are present. O'Brien and Peck have discarded a large section of the first scene in Act II, eliminating “Geraniums in the Window” and “Nothing So Bad for a Woman”, which does major damage to the Carrie/Snow plotline. They also eliminate the townspeople from “What’s the Use of Wonderin’” and the first third of “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over” which reduces the theme of community which runs through the show. Scenes such as the end of the first act, Mrs. Mullen’s moment over Billy’s body and the poker game between Billy and Jigger which illuminate the story and characters are gone. The opening sequence is specifically intended to be a pantomime and not a ballet, contradicting Hammerstein’s intent and losing many plot points in the process. This is a Carousel who think it’s all about the music and dance and not about the story. | |
