OCR of "West Side Story" album cover -- when would Tony and Maria have had time to joyously run around the neighborhood hand in hand and as openly as depicted?

They meet at the dance at the gym, he later comes to her balcony/fire escape, they have a secret wedding-type ceremony, but I think he then leaves; they later spend the night together, but when would they dare show themselves out on the streets what with the rumble, death of Bernardo, etc? It's a lovely album cover of Carol Lawrence and Larry Kert (see link), but when in the time frame of Tony and Maria's relationship (is it about 24 hours from start to finish?), would they have the opportunity to be in that scene captured in the photo on the sidewalk in front of tenements and the garbage cans?

This was shared last year, but seemed right to share again here. It's a bunch of pics from the album cover photo shoot - which includes several in a park. Fun to see what other options there were! Also, some interesting photos from rehearsals.

Thank you for sharing those. So wonderful to see them. I guess this is the closest we'll get to see Chita dancing as Anita from those early days. Am I wrong in thinking there's no video available of Chita dancing/performing Anita? (I mean, other than concerts/tributes many years later)

Those were really wonderful. Thank you for posting them. The street ones are better than the park ones, which I don’t think give much of a sense of the setting of the show.

.....that that cover represents what is inside their hearts. It captures how they feel and I think to call it "misleading" is kind of cray. It perfectly captures the spirit of songs like "Maria", "Tonight" and "Somewhere".

What would you have them doing? Tony giving it to Maria beneath the sheets? Or her sobbing over his bleeding corpse?

I think the fantasy option was the best.

The show itself even has them in non-literal scenes where this scene could exist, in the Somewhere ballet (one of my favorite pieces of music in the show).

From the script, describing the first section of the ballet, leading into "Somewhere":

"Then the apartment itself goes and the two LOVERS begin to run,
battering against the walls of the city, breaking through as chaotic
figures of the gangs, of the violence flail around them. But they do
break through and suddenly — they are in a world of space and air
and sun. They stop, looking at it, pleased, startled as BOYS and
GIRLS from both sides come on. And they, too, stop and stare, happy,
pleased.
Their clothes are soft, pastel versions of what they have worn before.
They begin to dance, to play: no sides, no hostility now; just joy and
pleasure and warmth. More and more join, making a world that
TONY and MARIA want to be in, belong to, to share their love with.
As they begin the steps of a gently love dance, a GIRL is heard singing:
"

I have to file this under "much too literal."

True, it made a great marketing photo, but I'm wondering if anyone else ever wondered about this. Maybe some folks going to see the show were waiting for a scene like this with Tony and Maria in the streets, perhaps dancing. Of course, someone I know was disappointed re: the "truth in advertising" since the "Full Monty" logo had the guys apparently naked but with bare feet, but in the show they wore shoes! :)

Their "somewhere/someplace" is a good answer, but wouldn't they have imagined someplace nicer without garbage pails?

I also open this discussion up to other misleading album covers or logos.

The OBC album cover of "Annie" has the cartoon Annie standing there among the bubble letters of her name and depicted as (gasp!) blonde.

Hey, wait a minute!! Henry Higgins never strings Eliza up and manipulates her like a marionette! When does that happen in the musical????

Haha - but that's not misleading. Shaw (or is it God as he is drawn) is manipulating Higgins as to what he says and does, and so does Higgins in turn do to Eliza. Well, until she rebels and starts to change/possibly manipulate him in turn. I don't know anyone who has included a marionette show as part of any version of "My Fair Lady", but hey they have crossdressing men in "Get Me To the Church on Time" in this production so anything is possible!

I think the image of garbage-strewn streets gives record buyers an idea of the show’s rough-and-tumble setting while, at the same time, foregrounding the idealized love represented by Tony and Maria (“love blooming in the slums,” if you will). Come to think of it, that paradox actually makes the album cover work better for me.
