| Without disagreeing with you about the difference approach by the directors, Sher’s changes are in tone and staging — every song that Lerner and Loewe wrote are present (despite some internal trims) and every scene Lerner (and Shaw) wrote are present. O'Brien and Peck have discarded a large section of the first scene in Act II, eliminating “Geraniums in the Window” and “Nothing So Bad for a Woman”, which does major damage to the Carrie/Snow plotline. They also eliminate the townspeople from “What’s the Use of Wonderin’” and the first third of “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over” which reduces the theme of community which runs through the show. Scenes such as the end of the first act, Mrs. Mullen’s moment over Billy’s body and the poker game between Billy and Jigger which illuminate the story and characters are gone. The opening sequence is specifically intended to be a pantomime and not a ballet, contradicting Hammerstein’s intent and losing many plot points in the process. This is a Carousel who think it’s all about the music and dance and not about the story. |
