Most small theatres here live hand-to-mouth. The cost of replacing all that equipment within a two-year timeframe, in many cases, would be prohibitive. That doesn't mean more efficient solutions shouldn't be sought, but these incoming regulations have cost implications for performance spaces that I suspect simply didn't occur to the people who drafted them.
I should also say - in terms of the way I live my own life, I am about as green as you can get without being named Elphaba or Kermit. Every single lightbulb in my home is a low-watt LED bulb, the house is properly insulated, all the appliances and the boiler were chosen for their energy efficiency, I seem to have elevated recycling almost to the level of a religion, I choose not to drive a car, and I donate to green causes every month. I absolutely think it's worth spending money on reducing emissions, and I put my money where my mouth is - but for performance spaces, these regulations are unworkable in their current form. |
