Brooklyn's Brave New World Repertory Theatre Presents

Arthur Miller's
A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE

Miller's Self-Proclaimed Greek Tragedy Comes to Red Hook,
the Original Setting of this American Classic

May 31-June 24
The Waterfront Barge Museum, Red Hook, Brooklyn

Brave New World Repertory Theatre, the Brooklyn-based theatre company that first won acclaim with To Kill A Mockingbird staged on the front porches of Victorian Flatbush in 2005, is pleased to present Arthur Miller's A View From The Bridge onboard the Waterfront Barge Museum in Red Hook Brooklyn, where the play is set, May 31-June 24.

Brave New World's immersive production, onboard the covered century old barge docked in Red Hook, will involve the audience in a classic domestic drama about a longshoreman named Eddie Carbone, his wife Beatrice and their orphaned niece Catherine. When Beatrice's undocumented relatives arrive from Italy to work the docks, conflict grows between Eddie and cousin Rodolpho. The intimacy of the Waterfront Museum space, with the audience merely feet away from the action, will serve to drive home the tragic events of the story.

The play is especially timely, says Claire Beckman, BNW's co-founder/producing artistic director who is also playing Beatrice. "Eddie Carbone is a flawed Everyman like most of Miller's leading men," she says, "but he is also xenophobic, homophobic, patriarchal, white and working class. He does his fair share of 'mansplaining,' while he struggles with inappropriate feelings for his 17 year-old niece. He checks every box for the tragically flawed American Male in 2018."

Director Alex Dmitriev, whom Beckman first met 30 years ago in another production of View, says the intimate setting aboard the Waterfront Museum will let in the tragedy of the story, "allowing the audience in Miller's words 'to strike a particular note of astonishment at the way in which, and the reasons for which, a man will endanger and risk and lose his very life.'"

Brave New World Rep finally received the rights to produce A View From The Bridge after a wait of almost a decade - before, during and after two Broadway revivals. During that time, this American classic by Brooklyn's greatest playwright has only increased in cultural and political significance as a play about restricted immigration and the American Dream.

BNW has previously produced acclaimed productions of two other Miller classics: The Crucible in 2010 and The American Clock in 2011. More recently, BNW and Beckman produced The Plantation, ("a startlingly visceral immersive adaptation of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard," New York Times) on Governors Island in 2017.Beckman also directed the BNW's seminal, 2005 site-specific production To Kill a Mockingbird staged on the front porches of a tree-lined street in Victorian Flatbush, and other acclaimed productions such as The Tempest on the Coney Island beach and boardwalk in 2009, the lantern lit production of The Crucible in 2010 (New York magazine's Critics Pick) and Street Scene on the stoop of a Park Slope walk-up (named one of 25 best 2013 shows by L Magazine).

About Brave New World Repertory Theatre
For the past 13 years, Brooklyn's Brave New World Rep has carved out a site-specific niche presenting re-envisioned classics and works by Brooklyn playwrights. Recent work includes free performances of Elmer Rice's Street Scene, where the company closed off a street in Park Slope and used a tenement building and adjacent street as the stage, Orson Welles' Moby Dick-Rehearsed, presented on the Waterfront Barge Museum in Red Hook and The Plantation, a bold new adaptation of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, a post-Civil War story set after emancipation but before the onset of Jim Crow. This immersive production was performed in The Commanding Officer's House on Governors Island (August 31-September 24, 2017).

The company earned a reputation of delivering unexpectedly immersive works to communities all around Brooklyn, beginning with its 2005 production of To Kill a Mockingbird, presented on the front porches and sidewalks of a tree-lined Ditmas Park street. http://www.bravenewworldrep.org
